Preventing mold in a humid climate
Practical prevention suited to TN's humid climate.
The moisture-first idea
Mold needs moisture more than anything else, so prevention is really moisture control. In a humid climate the goal is to keep indoor spaces — especially crawl spaces, basements, and bathrooms — dry enough that mold can't establish.
Practical steps
- Keep gutters clear and downspouts directing water well away from the foundation — heavy rain is frequent here.
- Run bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans, and vent them outside rather than into the attic.
- Consider a crawl-space vapor barrier or dehumidifier if the space stays damp.
- Address plumbing drips quickly, before the wood behind them stays wet.
- Watch grading so soil slopes away from the house.
