Preventing mold in a humid climate

Practical prevention suited to TN's humid climate.

The moisture-first idea

Mold needs moisture more than anything else, so prevention is really moisture control. In a humid climate the goal is to keep indoor spaces — especially crawl spaces, basements, and bathrooms — dry enough that mold can't establish.

Practical steps

  1. Keep gutters clear and downspouts directing water well away from the foundation — heavy rain is frequent here.
  2. Run bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans, and vent them outside rather than into the attic.
  3. Consider a crawl-space vapor barrier or dehumidifier if the space stays damp.
  4. Address plumbing drips quickly, before the wood behind them stays wet.
  5. Watch grading so soil slopes away from the house.
